From the late 60s and 70s a spiritual phenomenon called the Charismatic Movement swept all denominations, including the Roman Catholic Church.

The intention of God the Father in sending a widespread Holy Spirit outpouring in this way, was to fill believers with the Holy Spirit and draw them closer to God and to restore biblical truth. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth.

Recently some Christians I know were sharing how they went to a Roman Catholic Charismatic weekend seminar. This brought back to me some memories from long ago and some deep concerns about the Catholic Charismatic Movement.

The Church of Rome is a long time past its use by date. In fact it never had a use date for the Protestant believer. The Roman Catholic Church bears no resemblance to what the New Testament paradigms of how the church should be and what Christians should believe.

The Protestant Churches include all the churches that don’t accept the authority of the Church of Rome. This includes Anglicans, Presbyterians, Methodists, Baptists, Pentecostals and all similar denominations.

As I sat and listened to my friends sharing about going to a Catholic Charismatic Meeting, I felt very disturbed in my spirit.

These are the reasons:

1. Our Protestant forebears spilled their own blood for their beliefs in Christ and in the holy scriptures, in order for the Protestant churches to be born. In the UK and Europe the Roman Catholic Church hounded, persecuted and slaughtered believers who dared to defy the Church of Rome and believe that a Christian could have a relationship with God through Jesus Christ without the help and control of Rome and to read the Holy Bible without the help of Roman Priests. These brave Protestants defied the authority of the Roman Church, defied its controlling religious spirit, and rejected its non-biblical doctrines and it’s priests.

2. Over many hundreds of years, the Jesuits were used as mercenaries and slaughtered hundreds of thousands of Protestant believers in the name of Christ and in the name of the Church of Rome.

For more information google “Waldenses”. These were believers in France were severely persecuted and almost exterminated. They were forced to flee to the French Alps, other countries and also to go underground. The persecution of them and many other Protestant groups by the Church of Rome was severe, merciless and barbaric. Many were burned at the stake. Some Waldensian towns were genocided. There were mighty outpourings of the Holy Spirit amongst the Waldenses and horrifying persecution of them by the Church of Rome and slaughter by the thousands.

3. The Waldenses and many other Protestant groups sacrificed their lives for us. They changed the world so that we might believe the holy scriptures and worship God in freedom and without persecution.

4. The Waldenses and our Protestant forebears would be horrified if they knew that we were fellowshipping with the Church of Rome by attending Catholic Charismatic Meetings.

5. The Roman Catholic Church believes that they are the only true bearers of God’s message to mankind. This is the bottom-line. The Church of Rome never compromises or welcomes new viewpoints. It only welcomes and absorbs.

6. Worship and prayer to Mary, the mother of Jesus. This is still practiced extensively in the Church of Rome today, including in the Catholic Charismatic Movement.

7. Prayer to the saints. This is also practiced today, including in the Catholic Charismatic movement.

8. The Authority of the Priesthood. Roman Catholics believe that the priesthood are the intermediaries between God and man.

This is contradictory to the many scriptures which say that we should each individually relate directly to God through Jesus Christ.

9. I have observed that Catholic Charismatics fuse conveniently the moving of the Spirit with the doctrines of the Church of Rome.

10. There are no guarantees when a Catholic Charismatic person prays for you that you are going to have the purity of the Spirit of Jesus imparted to you. This is because the Charismatic Roman Catholics still retain a lot of doctrine like the above doctrine and marry it with their view of the Holy Spirit. You never know what you are going to get when they pray for you. Do you want to take this risk?

The Catholic Charismatic movement is best avoided. The bible says categorically to “come out from among them and be separate”. This includes being separated from controlling organisations which err from the Holy Scriptures like the Church of Rome, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormons, Moonies and various cults.
