Donald Elley of Bellingen:

This article is part 16 of a sequential study of select passages in the Book of Romans.

To master Biblical truth and knowledge it’s important to have a clear understanding of the whole counsel of God – the Old Testament and the New Testament.

Romans 6:19

19 For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness.

In context:

15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! 16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? 17 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. 18 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. 19 I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness.

My comments:

Romans 6:19

so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness.

In the last few articles in this series, we have been looking at God’s Grace, sin and our fallen nature and living right before God without sin.

In his thinking and writing, Paul is building up to some really important keys to Christian success which he outlines in Romans 8. Those keys in Romans 8 strongly and clearly state how the keys to Christian success centre in the Holy Spirit.

I mention this so you, the reader, can see that we must be patient and wise in our study and understanding of holy scriptures in the Bible.

We need to read, understanding and know the Bible, lest we be lead astray.

Many people throughout history have erred by cherry-picking scriptures to suit a given outcome, paradigm or extra-Biblical philosophy. All the cults like Jehovah’s Witness, The Mormons, and Prosperity Gospel Pentecostals like Hillsong have gone off track in this way.

so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness.

There is this choice aspect to not sinning.

We can choose not to sin anymore. We can choose to live for Christ daily.
