This is my favourite rendition of this song, although quite a few country musicians have had a go, even Joan Baez.

Eric Bogle composed it.

I think it sounds best sung by an Australian, given its an Aussie song about Gallipoli – our most famous war battle, which we lost to the Turks.

The colonials of Australian, New Zealand and Canada were sent as canon fodder by the British commanders up hill against the Turks – 250,000 casualties on either side. Allied forces 46,000 casualties. Turks 65,000 casualties.

“In all, some 480,000 Allied forces took part in the Gallipoli Campaign, at a cost of more than 250,000 casualties, including some 46,000 dead. On the Turkish side, the campaign also cost an estimated 250,000 casualties, with 65,000 killed.”

A large number of men fighting in a relatively small area. I’ve visited Gallipoli – sombre and sad place.
