Chelsea Manning releases photo on social media revealing new look

19 May 2017

Chelsea Manning has revealed her new look as a woman, after being freed from a Kansas military prison earlier this week.

The transgender soldier, formerly known as Bradley Manning, has been released after serving seven years of a 35-year sentence for leaking classified materials.

She took to social media with a portrait photograph of her with short-cropped hair, bright red lipstick and a dark outfit with a plunging neckline.

Manning has published a few photos to her accounts since being released, but this is the first one showing her face.

The 29-year-old Oklahoma native wrote with the photo: “Okay, so here I am everyone!! #HelloWorld”

The black-and-white photo often associated with Manning after she announced her transition was taken in 2010.

She was convicted in 2013 for providing more than 700,000 classified materials to anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks.

Manning was released early in accordance with former president Barack Obama’s decision to grant her clemency in his final days in office.

The US Army says she will remain on active duty on “excess leave” after her release from prison — in that status she will be unpaid but will be legally entitled to military medical care.

Manning and her attorneys have refused to divulge her post-prison whereabouts or immediate plans.
